CORVALLIS - Christina Kreilich of Scio is the 1996 recipient of the $5,500 Leo G. Spitzbart Memorial Scholarship for her work in 4-H and the Oregon State Fair.

The Spitzbart scholarship honors the late Leo Spitzbart, manager of the Oregon State Fair from 1935 until 1957, according to Duane Johnson, Oregon State University Extension 4-H youth development specialist.

The award is given to an outstanding 4-H member who has participated in State Fair and who plans to attend OSU.

Kreilich, who lives on a farm with her parents and three sisters, is a senior at Regis High School in Stayton and has been a 4-H member for nine years. She has participated in State Fair fashion revues and served as vice-chair of the 4-H areas for knitting and crocheting, and clothing at the State Fair.

Among her many community service activities, Kreilich and 10 other 4-H members sewed 30 nightshirts for premature babies at Portland Emanuel Hospital; knitted hats and scarves for needy residents in her community; and sewed diapers for Birthright, a non-profit organization for needy pregnant women and new mothers.

In 1995, Kreilich was awarded a $1,500 national 4-H scholarship on the basis of her 4-H clothing activities and sewing skills. In addition to her 4-H project work, Kreilich has been a junior and teen 4-H leader. She also served as a 4-H Ambassador in 1994 and 1995.

Kreilich carries a 4.0 grade average at Regis High School and is ranked first in her senior class. She plans to study home economics at OSU.
