CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Press has published a paperback version of a critically acclaimed book that examines the decline of some salmon species in the Pacific Northwest.

Written by Joseph Cone, "A Common Fate: Endangered Salmon and the People of the Pacific Northwest" was first published in hardcover in 1995 by Henry Holt. It received an award as the "Outstanding Academic Book for 1996" by Choice.

Cone traces the long history of declining salmon runs in the region and looks at the growing national concern over the problem. The book looks at some of the factors involved in the decline, including habitat loss, overfishing and the construction of dams.

The book also profiles key participants in the struggle to save salmon -environmentalists, scientists, politicians and industry executives.

"These compelling portraits introduce the groups concerned with the salmon's fate and identify the complex issues surrounding the salmon's decline," said Jo Alexander, managing editor of the OSU Press.
