CORVALLIS - Barbara Gartner, an assistant professor of forest products at Oregon State University, will be honored in a White House ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 16 for her innovative research in wood products.

Gartner will receive a prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which includes five years of research support.

Gartner studies tree physiology and ecology, trying to learn how trees maintain their sapwood. Understanding this could be a key to silvicultural practices that might influence the process. It could also be valuable in more accurate predictions of the Earth's "carbon budget" that relate to global warming and the greenhouse effect.

Gartner received her doctorate from Stanford University in 1990 and has been on the OSU faculty since 1992.
