CORVALLIS - Robert C. Wilson, a doctor of veterinary medicine and department head at Auburn University, has been named as the new dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University.

Wilson, an expert in veterinary pharmacology with 29 years of experience in veterinary practice, military service and academic research and instruction, will assume his new responsibilities on June 1.

The interim dean of the college, Norman Hutton, will continue in that role until June, said Roy Arnold, OSU provost and executive vice president.

"Dr. Wilson will bring exceptional experience to Oregon State's College of Veterinary Medicine," Arnold said. "He was engaged in private veterinary practice for more than 10 years before beginning his career in higher education.

"His leadership has been responsible for innovative research and instructional programs at both the University of Georgia and Auburn University," Arnold said, "and for building a team approach to the delivery of vital outreach services."

Following an extended recruitment and review process by students, interest groups, faculty and administrators, Wilson "was clearly the top candidate for this position and we're extremely pleased that he accepted it," said Kelvin Koong, an OSU professor and chair of the search committee.

Wilson is a professor and head of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his veterinary medical degree from Auburn University in 1963 and doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Georgia in 1974.

He also is director of the Institute for Biological Detection Systems, a research institute at Auburn University, and editor of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education. This publication is dedicated to improving the quality of education of veterinary students and serves as a forum for innovations in education.

Wilson has received several career honors for his teaching at both the University of Georgia and Auburn University, and is a strong advocate of the importance of teaching for every faculty member, including administrators.

He also has supported collaborative research programs; expanding outreach, communication and Extension programs to the public; improving clinical veterinary services; and enhancing college development and support from alumni, consumers, interest groups and the legislature.
