CORVALLIS - James A. Moore, a professor in the Department of Bioresource Engineering at Oregon State University, has been named head of the OSU department.

He replaces professor Andrew Hashimoto, who recently was promoted to associate provost for academic affairs.

A waste water specialist with the OSU Extension Service, Moore has been at OSU since 1979. He has authored more than 100 publications and conducted numerous studies on treating agricultural and industrial waste waters. His most recent work includes using constructed wetlands to treat pulp mill effluent and dairy waste water. Over the years, he has trained 20 graduate students in the field.

Moore earned his doctorate in agricultural engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1975. He received the highest honor the U.S. Department of Agriculture can bestow upon an Extension Service staff member in 1985 - the USDA's Distinguished Service Award - for his work on pollution problems in Tillamook Bay.

Prior to coming to OSU, Moore was in the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Minnesota for 11 years.
