CORVALLIS - Oregon State University Extension Sea Grant agent Ginny Goblirsch has been named Woman of the Year by the Newport Business and Professional Women's Club.

Goblirsch, who lives in Otter Rock, was cited for her work with fishing families, fishing crews and the fishing industry on issues ranging from on-board safety to family well-being.

Herself a fisherman's wife, Goblirsch has been instrumental in Sea Grant's Fishing Families Project, a coast-wide effort to link fishing crews and their families with educational resources that can help them adapt to changing fisheries. She is credited with helping establish a network of fishermen's wives groups up and down the coast to provide information and support to fishing families.

She is the author or editor of several publications, including A Guide to Oregon's Commercial Fishing Vessels and the Fishing Family and Business Resource Kit.

Connie Kennedy, president of the Newport Fishermen's Wives, said in nominating Goblirsch for the award that she has "taken the lead in preparing the commercial and charter fishing fleets for unexpected emergencies at sea" by organizing and teaching marine safety classes.

Goblirsch has been with Oregon Sea Grant and the OSU Extension Service since 1986. Prior to that she worked at OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center.

The Newport Business and Professional Women's Club is part of a nationwide organization dedicated to fostering the achievements of women in business and professional life.
