CORVALLIS - Kensal E. Van Holde, a distinguished professor emeritus of biochemistry and biophysics at Oregon State University, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Founded in 1780 by John Adams, this organization recognizes distinguished contributions to science, scholarship, public affairs and the arts. Among the 4,000 fellows are 160 Nobel laureates and 64 Pulitzer Prize winners, in addition to leading artists, political leaders and others.

Van Holde, a cancer researcher and member of the National Academy of Sciences, had an active career at OSU in physical chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics.

He authored several books, more than 120 scientific papers, and did pioneering research on the structure of chromatin, a complex of protein and DNA that is responsible for the expression of cell function and reproduction.
