CORVALLIS - Oregon State University's Hispanic Cultural Center will become the Centro Culturale Cesar Chavez with a dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30. The center is located on 26th Street across from Gill Coliseum.

The ceremony will feature a dance performance by Baila Con Mexico.

The center's name honors farm labor leader Cesar Chavez, who, in 1962, founded a group to seek better pay and working conditions for farm laborers. That group evolved into the United Farm Workers of America.

Chavez died in April 1993. In 1994, President Bill Clinton honored Chavez's memory with the posthumous award of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to U.S. civilians by their government.

There are three additional cultural centers at OSU, including the Black Cultural Center, Asian Cultural Center and the Native American Longhouse. The centers provide a place to meet and learn about different cultures and ethnic groups. Each center offers social, cultural and recreational events throughout the year.
