CORVALLIS - Oregon's interim commissioner for community colleges has been named to a new position at Oregon State University.

Gretchen Schuette will become special assistant to the provost for Portland area programs in mid-January, OSU Provost Roy Arnold said Monday.

"I'm pleased Dr. Schuette has agreed to assist OSU in our extended education efforts in the metropolitan area," Arnold said. "Because of her experience with community colleges, we expect she will provide strong leadership for OSU's efforts in extended education and in developing partnerships with other institutions and the private sector in the metropolitan area."

Schuette is a graduate of Oregon State University. She earned her Ph.D. at OSU after completing her B.A. degree at Smith College and her M.S. degree from Central Michigan University.

She served as dean of humanities and sciences at Chemeketa Community College in Salem from 1988-92, and as executive vice president at Mt. Hood Community College from 1992-96. Her current interim position will be completed in January. She has held the post while Roger Bassett has been on assignment with Gov. John Kitzhaber.
