CORVALLIS - An Oregon State university student adviser was honored with a regional award for outstanding service to the profession.

William H. Smart, OSU international student and scholar adviser, received the award from the Foundation for International Service to recognize his work at the regional level within the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs: Association For International Educators.

The annual award honors an individual who makes significant contributions in service to international educators in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and British Columbia. Smart is the regional representative on government regulatory matters.

Smart began his OSU career in 1984 in the university's Office of International Education.

The association, which was founded in 1948, counts more than 7,500 members throughout the world and works to promote the concept that international exchange programs advance learning and scholarship, build respect among cultures and encourage constructive leadership.
