CORVALLIS - A series of environmental stewardship workshops for adults who work with youths begins with a two-day session on water quality and waste management this Nov. 1-2.

This first workshop, sponsored by the Oregon State University Extension 4-H Youth Development Program, will be held at the Oregon 4-H Center near Salem, and combine outdoor exploration and indoor science experiments.

The workshop series is aimed at adults who work with youths in school, home school, after school and day or resident camp settings, according to Virginia Thompson, OSU Extension 4-H education specialist.

"At the workshops, the participants will learn about a variety of existing environmental education programs so they, in turn, can use them with young people," Thompson said.

The November workshop will prepare adult leaders to use three programs that develop a stewardship ethic in young people by engaging them in environmental issues in their communities.

"Give Water a Hand" provides a framework for young people to become involved with real issues in their communities. "From Ridges to Rivers: Watershed Exploration" provides an informal approach to science education for grades 4Ð6. And "EM-Power Waste Management Program" provides hands-on activities for grades 6Ð9 to gather information about waste management concerns.

Registration for the two-day workshop is $55. Scholarship funds are available. The deadline for registering is Friday, Oct. 18. The workshop will be held at the Oregon 4-H Conference and Education Center, 5390 4-H Road NW, Salem, Oregon.
