CORVALLIS - A fall term lecture series at Oregon State University will focus on a variety of topics relating to ethics, from environmentalism and Western religious thought to breast cancer and genetic testing.

These "Ethics Table Talk" discussions will begin Monday, Oct. 21, and are free and open to the public.

Speakers in the series include Judy Spoelstra, OSU women's basketball coach; Russell A. Butkus, University of Portland faculty member; Janet Lee, director of OSU's Women's Studies program; and Courtney Campbell, director of OSU's Program for Ethics, Science and the Environment, which is sponsoring the series.

Talks in the series will be: Oct. 21: "Caring for the Earth: Environmental Ethics and the Judeo-Christian Tradition," by Russell A. Butkus, University of Portland, at noon in Westminster House, and at 4:30 pm in the Memorial Union Room 209. Butkus will discuss how Western religious thought can contribute to environmentalism, rather than cause environmental problems.

Nov. 4: "Disempowering Knowledge?: Ethics and Genetic Tests for Breast Cancer," by Courtney Campbell, noon in the Memorial Union Room 102. Campbell will discuss the ethical choices faced by a woman with a family history of breast cancer whose physician recommends she take a genetic test to determine her risk.

Nov. 5: "Points, Fouls, and Turnovers: Spoelstra's Ethical Dilemmas in Sports," by Judy Spoelstra, OSU women's basketball coach, noon in the Memorial Union Council Room.

Nov. 18: "Blood Stories," by Janet Lee, OSU Women Studies, noon in the Memorial Union Room 102. Lee will discuss her research on menarche and the politics of the body, including an ethical critique about cultural views and stigmas of the female body.
