Boyd's talk will also be broadcast by satellite to Portland State University's Neuberger Hall Room 454 and University of Oregon's Knight Library, Studio F.

Boyd's talk is part of OSU's Family Business Management class. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and advance registration is required. For information, contact OSU's Austin Family Business Program at 541-737-3326.

Boyd is president of Boyd Coffee Co., headquartered in Gresham. The company is a fourth-generation family business that provides coffee products and brewing equipment, plus other food products, to the food service industry as well as offices and stores.

The company was founded in 1900 by Percival Dewey Boyd. Boyd Tea Co., as it was then known, was a horse and wagon operation, selling products to housewives door-to-door. The company bought coffee from local roasters and customers ground coffee beans in hand-operated coffee mills.

Richard Boyd entered the family business at a young age; his first job was counting coffee lids. He worked in various production and manufacturing and administration positions during high school and college summer vacations. He progressed from sales area representative, to personnel manager, to secretary-treasurer, to executive vice president.

Boyd became president of the firm in 1991. His areas of focus are strategic planning and managing the culture of the company.

Active in the community, he serves on the advisory board for the Salvation Army in Gresham, on the board of directors for Associated Oregon Industries, as vice chairman for the board of directors of Cascade Employers Association, and is an active member of the Rotary Club of Portland.
