CORVALLIS - John W. Lee, a professor of mathematics at Oregon State University, has been named the new chair of the OSU Department of Mathematics.

With 35 members, this is one of the university's largest departments. Lee will succeed Frank Flaherty, who will return to teaching and research.

Lee is an expert in differential equations, integral equations and approximation theory. He received his doctorate in mathematics from Stanford University in 1969 and joined the OSU faculty that year.

Lee, who has been honored by OSU and the College of Science for teaching excellence, said he plans to continue undergraduate teaching while serving as department chair.
