CORVALLIS - Norman Hutton, associate dean emeritus of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University, has been elected 1997-98 vice president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

In this position Hutton said he plans to focus his efforts on improvement of veterinary student education.

Hutton, who retired from OSU in last month, has also served the AVMA on its animal welfare committee, continuing education advisory committee, and national board examination committee. He is also a consultant to the National Library of Medicine; the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare; the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service; and the National Institute of Health.

The AVMA is the nation's primary organization of veterinary medical practitioners, with leading roles in veterinary medical research, animal welfare, continuing education, legislative and administrative policies, accreditation of professional schools and other activities.

Hutton received his veterinary medical degree in 1966 from Iowa State University and has been on the OSU faculty since 1977.
