CORVALLIS - A 1997 graduate of Oregon State University has received a Fulbright Scholarship to study plant pathogens of rice in Thailand.

Gary Vaughn, a senior from Philomath, Ore., who just received a bachelor's degree in microbiology, will spend a year collaborating with leading agricultural researchers at Mahidol University in Bangkok.

An outstanding student at OSU, Vaughn says he plans to enter medical school following completion of the fellowship and specialize in pathogenic microbiology.

During his university career, Vaughn received numerous honors, including membership in Phi Kappa Phi, recipient of several scholarships and fellowships, and being named the Waldo Cummings Outstanding Student at OSU in 1995 and 1996.

His activities included international travel, helping international students to learn English and work as a motor skills clinician with physically and mentally disabled students.
