CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University research associate's book, "Restless Genius: Robert Hooke and His Earthly Thoughts," has earned an honorable mention in geology and earth science from the Association of American Publishers.

Ellen Tan Drake's book, published in 1996 by Oxford University Press, traces Hooke's influence and contributions in geology, including volcanism and earthquakes. An English scientist, Hooke lived from 1635-1703.

Drake's book was entered in the association's Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division Annual Awards Competition.

Drake, of OSU's College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, focuses on the history and philosophy of science. One of her areas of concentration is the foundation of geology in the 17th century, especially the contributions of Hooke and his influence on the later development of the science.
