CORVALLIS - National experts on new ways to develop the elevation, biodiversity, climate and other data used in studying the global environment will speak May 19 in the Milton Harris Seminar at Oregon State University.

The meeting, which is titled "Discrete Global Grids," will be from 1-5 p.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center. It is free and open to the public.

The seminar honors Jon Kimerling, an OSU professor of geosciences and recipient of the Milton Harris Award for Basic Research, made by the OSU College of Science. Kimerling and research colleagues recently developed a new system using hexagonal grids that more accurately represents global geographical information.

Speakers at the conference include Kimerling; Denis White, an OSU research associate in geosciences; Kevin Sahr, a research assistant in geosciences; Anthony Olsen, a research statistician with the EPA laboratory in Corvallis; and Ross Kiester, a research assistant with the U.S. Forest Service.

Other presentations will be made by Noel Cressie, an international expert on sampling designs from Iowa State University; Ralph Kahn, a researcher on satellite remote sensing from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and science columnist for the Los Angeles Times; and Dan Carr, an expert in spatial statistics and visualization from George Mason University.
