CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will sponsor a symposium on "Riparian Use, Ecology and Management" on Tuesday, May 27, that will feature scientists from several disciplines, institutions and agencies presenting and interpreting research related to stream and riparian issues.

The symposium will include presentations in areas such as historical changes in stream habitat, factors influencing stream temperatures, riparian wildlife ecology, and livestock and timber management in riparian ecosystems.

Participating will be researchers in OSU's fisheries and wildlife, rangeland resources, forest engineering and forest science departments, the University of Oregon's geology department, and the U.S. Forest Service. In addition, Langdon Marsh, director of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, will discuss the DEQ's perspective of riparian ecology.

OSU President Paul Risser, a botanist and former president of the Ecological Society of America, will conclude the event with a synopsis and overview.

The symposium, at OSU's LaSells Stewart Center, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. More than 35 poster presentations, most prepared by students, will be on display.

The program is intended for scientists, students, state and federal agency personnel and interested members of the general public, according to co-chairs Bill Krueger, head of OSU's Department of Rangeland Resources, and Erik Fritzell, head of the university's Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.

The format will give people attending an opportunity to be involved during discussion and question periods. One goal of the symposium, sponsored by OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences, is to identify opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
