CORVALLIS - The 1997 Starker Lectures at Oregon State University will begin Oct. 23 with a presentation by Robert Liberty, the executive director for 1000 Friends of Oregon.

The lecture series this year is titled "Natural Resources and the 21st Century: Where Are We Headed?" Each presentation will be on a Thursday from 4-5 p.m. in Peavy Auditorium, Room 130, on the OSU campus. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Liberty is a University of Oregon political science major who went on to get his law degree from Harvard University and today leads one of Oregon's most prominent environmental groups. He will discuss "The Future of Eden's Hedge: The Facts of the Willamette Valley Basin in the 21st Century."

Other speakers and their topics include:

- Oct. 30: Patrick Moore, a co-founder of Green Peace, author and chair of the forest practices committee of the Forest Alliance of British Columbia, speaking on the topic "Politics, Ecology and Clearcutting."

- Nov. 6: Don Chapman, an OSU alumnus and fish biologist with BioAnalysts Inc. in Boise, speaking on the topic "Instream Fish Habitat and Land Husbandry in the Intermountain West."

- Nov. 13: Fred Bunnell, professor and director of the Centre for Applied Conservation Biology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, speaking on the topic "Buzzwords, Buzz Saws, and Buzzards."

The Starker Lectures are made possible by gifts from the Starker Partners in memory of T.J. and Bruce Starker, prominent leaders in the development of the Oregon forest products industry.
