CORVALLIS - The College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University has honored its top faculty and staff with awards for their achievements.

Marcus Borg, a professor of philosophy, has received the 1997 CLA Excellence Award. Borg, the Hundere Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Culture, is one of the world's leading scholars on the historical study of Jesus, and a best-selling author. Borg organized a national conference last year on historical Jesus studies and has been featured nationally by several prominent news organizations.

The CLA C. Warren Hovland Service Award was presented to Paul Kopperman, for his contributions to OSU's Holocaust Memorial Program and for speaking on and off campus on the Holocaust as well as other topics. He also is nearing completion on a new book on medicine in the 18th century British military.

Lani Roberts, a senior instructor in philosophy, has received the CLA Thomas R. Meehan Excellence in Teaching Award for undergraduate teaching excellence. Roberts was cited for her ability to help students think critically and "act with principle," and for her efforts in teaching a highly acclaimed course on Ethics in Diversity.

The CLA Bill Wilkins Faculty Development Award was presented to Lynda J. King, who created an innovative World Wide Web site for teaching German literature, and for other activities that enhance foreign language curriculum and help undergraduate teaching. King is an associate professor of German at OSU.

Sunil Khanna, an assistant professor of anthropology, has received the CLA ECLAT Faculty Development Award. The award by ECLAT, the Emeriti on the College of Liberal Arts Team, is for faculty members who help develop curriculum or advance scholarly pursuits. Khanna was cited for work in making improvements in the anthropology human biology lab for teaching and research.

The CLA Outstanding Staff Award was presented to Karen Mills, who has been on the staff at OSU since 1986, and in the Department of Anthropology since 1991. She was cited for "many efforts on departmental service to students" and for her service to the university community as well.
