CORVALLIS - Christopher Bayne, a professor of zoology at Oregon State University, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

This professional organization, founded in 1848, is the world's largest federation of scientific and engineering societies with more than 144,000 members. Fellowship is awarded to selected members for work of scientific distinction.

Bayne is an expert in parasite transmission and the role of the immune system in defense against parasites. Among other studies, he has examined ways to enhance the natural immunity of trout to a variety of pathogens and parasites, and done extensive work on schistosomiasis, a debilitating parasitic disease that affects more than 200 million people in the tropics.

He received his doctorate in zoology from the University of Wales in 1967, has been on the OSU faculty since 1971 and served as chair of the Department of Zoology from 1986-89.
