CORVALLIS - A series of laminated and carved wood sculptures by Corvallis artist Samuel C.R. Hinds will go on display at Oregon State University's Fairbanks Gallery beginning Sept. 29.
The gallery is located in Fairbanks Hall near the corner of 26th Street and Jefferson Way.
A reception for the artist will be held in the gallery on Friday, Oct. 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Hinds' sculptures capture delicate figures with slender, tenuous forms in wood, according to Douglas Russell, gallery director.
"He uses the natural advantages of wood - the color, grain patterns and the ability to directly sculpt the media, while using lamination to resolve the inherent problems of shear and stress forces on thin or extended structures," Russell said.
Hinds begins by sculpting his ideas into clay, then slicing the clay into three-quarter inch sections, which are transferred to hardwood planks.
The artist received a bachelor of arts in printmaking and painting from OSU, and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Washington.
Fairbanks Gallery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The exhibit will continue through Oct. 29.
