CORVALLIS - Forty educators from Oregon and around the country will participate in a training workshop April 10-11 at Oregon State University that will help them assess foreign language proficiency.

OSU was chosen as one of five national sites for a workshop by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. During the two-day workshop, the 40 public school and university teachers will interview OSU language students in French, German, Spanish and Japanese to assess their proficiency levels under the guidance of experts.

"The assessment workshop is important to Oregon teachers because of the implementation of the state's new education benchmarks - CIM and CAM - and university entrance requirements in six content areas, including foreign languages," said Joseph Krause, interim chair of OSU's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

The OSU workshop is being coordinated by Deborah Lindsay of South Albany High School with support from the university's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
