CORVALLIS - Cheri Andersen of Salem is the 1998 recipient of an O.M. Plummer Scholarship in recognition of her achievements in the Oregon 4-H Program.

The scholarship honors Plummer, manager of the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland from 1910 to 1945, according to Duane Johnson, Oregon State University Extension 4-H youth development specialist.

The award is given to a 4-H member who has exhibited outstanding leadership, citizenship and public speaking skills, and has participated in a wide range of 4-H activities with emphasis in 4-H beef, sheep and swine projects.

Andersen, the daughter of Larry and Chloe Andersen, has been home schooled since the first grade and will complete high school this spring. She has been active in 4-H since 1989, when she joined a 4-H rabbit club. In 1990, Andersen joined a 4-H sheep club and began learning how to raise sheep.

She now has four ewes and breeds her own market lambs as well as raises rabbits to be sold as fryers. Andersen said her 4-H experiences taught her the business of rearing and managing animals. But even more important than the knowledge of animal science, she said, are the leadership and communication skills learned through 4-H that have become a part of her daily life.

Andersen plans to study English and business in college.
