CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Extension 4-H program is expecting nearly 2,000 kids at 4-H camps around the state this summer. To make sure they have a good time as well as learn something, 4-H has scheduled a workshop for camp leaders and staff on Saturday, May 30, at the 4-H Center near Salem.

Workshop participants will learn about innovative nature programs, and campfire and music activities for youngsters of all ages. In addition to 4-H camp leaders, the workshop is open to adults and older youth who work with children in day care, day camp or resident camp settings.

"Kids expect to have a wonderful time at summer camp. Meeting that expectation takes planning and staff training before camp begins," said Virginia Thompson, Oregon State University Extension 4-H Youth specialist for environmental and natural science programs.

The featured presenter at the workshop will be Terry Lieberstein, an environmental educator and musician. She has published in the American Camping Association's magazine, Camping, and appeared at the national 4-H Camping Conference.

Also on the agenda are sessions on pine needle basketry, youth development and archery.

"In addition to revitalizing your nature and campfire programs, the workshop offers a chance to network with staff from other camping programs," Thompson said.

The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Registration is $25, which includes three meals, snacks and supplies. The registration deadline is April 24. A $20 late fee will be charged after that date. No registrations will be accepted after May 8.

For people traveling a long distance, the 4-H Center has dormitory-style lodging available on Friday and Saturday night for $14 per person. For more information, contact Thompson at 503-371-7920 or local county offices of the OSU Extension Service.

The Oregon 4-H Foundation provided funding for the workshop to encourage attendance by keeping costs low, Thompson said.
