CORVALLIS - Stephen Binney, a professor of nuclear engineering at Oregon State University, has been named the new director of the university's Radiation Center, which includes a small nuclear reactor used primarily for scientific research and student e ducation.

Binney will replace Brian Dodd, a professor of nuclear engineering who is taking a three-year leave of absence from OSU to serve as a research reactor specialist with the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria.

In that position, Dodd will work with developing nations around the world which have research reactors, helping them make better use of the reactors for research, medical isotope production, trace element analysis and other peaceful purposes - some of which are the same types of work done with the OSU reactor.

Binney received his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley in 1970 and has been on the OSU faculty since 1973. He is an expert in nuclear instrumentation.
