CORVALLIS - An Oregon 4-H member has been awarded a $1,500 National 4-H Fashion Review scholarship in a competition involving 4-H members from all 50 states.

Brooke Huard of Medford was one of four winners nationwide.

The announcement was made at the National 4-H Youth Congress in Atlanta, Ga., where Huard was present to receive the award.

"The award is based on Huard's accomplishments related to clothing construction and participation in the 4-H fashion review as well as leadership and citizenship," said Jim Rutledge, Oregon State University Extension 4-H program leader.

Huard, daughter of Michael and Beverly Huard, is a senior at Hillcrest Academy. She has been a 4-H member since 1989 when she joined a 4-H clothing and textiles club.

Although she joined 4-H to learn to sew and to be in fashion review, Huard says 4-H also took her in some unexpected directions. For instance, she participated in the 4-H "Know Your State Government" program, which led to serving as a page in the Oregon Legislature. She was a page for State Sen. Lenn Hannon in 1995 and for State Rep. John Watt in 1997.

Among her many community service activities, she singled out a project making baby blankets for the neonatal unit of a local hospital. Huard is an accomplished ballet dancer and has performed at the Peter Britt Children's Festival, the Eugene Ballet and for art appreciation activities at public schools.

Huard plans to study clothing design and marketing at college.

The National 4-H Fashion Review Scholarship is sponsored by the McCall Pattern Company; the Husqvarna, Viking and White Sewing Machine Company; JoAnn Fabrics; and New York Fabrics and Crafts.
