CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University professor has been honored by a prestigious national gerontology association for writing the best scholarly article on aging.

Jon "Joe" Hendricks, a professor of sociology and dean of OSU's University Honors College, received the 1998 Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Award from The Gerontological Society of America.

His article, "Bridging Contested Terrain: Chaos or Prelude to a Theory," was published in the Canadian Journal of Aging. In the essay, Hendricks provides what analysts say is the first concrete application of the chaos theory to the study of aging.

Scholars attending the national conference praised Hendricks' work, calling it a "seminal article" on social gerontology.

Hendricks has been on the Oregon State University faculty since 1988, when he was appointed to chair the Department of Sociology. He was tabbed to head the honors college at the university in 1995.

Hendricks is author or editor of more than 20 books, including "Aging in Mass Society," and has written some 80 scholarly articles. Before coming to Oregon State, he was on the faculty of the University of Kentucky. He has a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
