CORVALLIS - A course titled "Earthquakes of the Pacific Northwest" being taught at Oregon State University will feature several prominent expert speakers during February and March.

The course is being broadcast in Corvallis on cable television channel 18, and area residents may call in with questions during the presentations at telephone 737-1740. Several of the presentations may be of special interest to homeowners, or have a bearing on Corvallis planning process, said Robert Yeats, an OSU professor of geology and course instructor. The class itself meets in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building, Room 102, and is open to the public.

The upcoming presentations from 7-10 p.m. include:

Feb. 9: earthquake prediction, forecasting, probabilistic seismic hazard assessment and its application to Oregon, building at a stable site, economics of urbanization hazards

Feb. 16: earthquake induced landslides and liquefaction, tsunami hazards

Feb. 23: earthquake insurance, simple ways to make your home safer against earthquakes

March 2: building codes, engineering large structures for seismic safety, role of the federal government in earthquake hazard mitigation

March 9: role of state, local governments and individuals in disaster preparedness
