CORVALLIS - Timothy J. Cowles, an Oregon State University faculty member since 1984, has been named associate dean of the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at OSU. His new duties are effective Feb. 1.

He replaces Nicklas Pisias, associate dean for the past four years, who is returning to full-time teaching and research in the college.

Cowles is an expert on phytoplankton, the microscopic plants that form the bottom of the food chain in the world's oceans.

As associate dean, he will have responsibility for the college's facilities, the student office, and other aspects of administration.

Cowles received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in oceanography from Duke University.
