CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University-Corvallis Symphony Orchestra will present a special afternoon concert of chamber music called "Stars of Our Orchestra" at the First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis this Sunday, Jan. 18, beginning at 2 p.m.

Members of the Cascade Trio (Michael Grossman, violin; Abigail Stoughton, viola; and Ann Grabe, cello) will be joined by Marlan Carlson, violin, Rachelle McCabe, piano, and Richard Meyn, bass, for the concert.

Grossman, Stoughton, and Grabe are principal chairs with the symphony orchestra, and Carlson is its music director. McCabe appears frequently as a solo recitalist and chamber musician, and is director of keyboard studies with the OSU Department of Music. Meyn is principal bassist with the Eugene Symphony.

Chamber music is instrumental ensemble music performed by just one player for each part, with emphasis on the group, not on individual players, Carlson said.

"While solo playing and orchestral playing are wonderful experiences for accomplished players, chamber music has a special place in the hearts of nearly all musicians," Carlson said. "Chamber music challenges and rewards musicians in that it demands the most of their technical abilities, musicality, and ability to interact with and respond to other players."

The program will include Johann Sebastian Bach's "Trio Sonata in G major," Ernst von Dohnanyi's "Serenade for Violin, Viola and Cello," and Franz Schubert's "Trout" Quintet. The Trout Quintet for piano and strings, written when Schubert was just 22, is one of the most popular of his chamber music compositions.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $6 for students. They are available in Corvallis at Rice's Pharmacy, Gracewinds Music, The Emporium, and the OSU music department, and in Albany at Sid Stevens Jewelers.
