CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University marine economist has been named to the new Science Advisory Board of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences.

Susan Hanna, an OSU professor and Oregon Sea Grant marine economist, joins 14 other scientists from around the country on the panel, which is chaired by Alfred M. Beeton, former director of the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory.

Hanna, who specializes in the economics of fishery management and common property resources, is on leave of absence from OSU with the H. David Heinz Foundation in Washington, D.C., directing a program entitled "Managing U.S. Fisheries."

"Dr. Hanna's research is not conducted from her office," said Robert Malouf, director of Oregon Sea Grant, which has funded much of Hanna's work. "It brings her face to face with agency heads, fishermen, and private citizens, and she has quietly and competently became a world authority on the economic and social forces that drive resource management."

Among other efforts, Hanna has analyzed the comparative economic histories of groundfish management in the Pacific and New England, and how different management schemes have affected the regions. She has served on the Ocean Studies Board of the National Research Council, the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Scientific and the Statistical Committee of the Pacific Fishery Management Council.

Hanna has also worked on global fisheries issues as a member of the International Association for the Study of Common Property and the Beijer International Institute of Ecological Economics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Hanna was recently elected to a four-year term on the executive committee of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade.
