CORVALLIS - Karyle Butcher has been named the Oregon State University librarian, and will continue to direct the Valley Library services and technological evolution during one of its largest periods of expansion in the school's history.

Butcher, who has filled this position for the past two years on an interim basis, was also recently chosen as the 1998 Oregon Librarian of the Year - the only time a librarian from an academic setting such as a university has received this award. She will be recognized with an endowed chair as the Donald and Delpha Campbell University Librarian, and be named deputy associate provost of information services.

"Karyle Butcher has the vision we're seeking to create - a 21st century library at Oregon State University," said Curt Pederson, associate provost for information services. "We are nearing completion on a world-class library facility and feel Karyle has done an outstanding job, despite the dual challenges of fund raising and a massive construction process."

Construction is expected to be complete in December, 1998, on the $47 million expansion of The Valley Library at OSU, which educators say will provide "one stop shopping" for information access to books, journals, databases and electronic information from all over the world.

Butcher received a master's of library science degree in 1965 from the University of Southern California, and during her career has worked in a variety of library service and management positions at both public and university libraries. She is an expert in the application of "total quality management" concepts and the use of evolving electronic technologies in library science.
