CORVALLIS - Eight students in the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University have been selected for Outstanding Senior Awards by the college.

Selection for the awards was based on academic achievement, including a minimum 3.5 grade point average, and contributions to the university and community.

Winners are:

BEAVERTON

Emily Lane, liberal studies. Her curricular theme of "Comparative Philosophies and Literatures of the World" encompassed both philosophy and English. She served as a counselor for the Science and Math Investigative Learning Experience (SMILE) program for minority youth, and worked with the Mary's River Gleaners to acquire food and goods for area needy.

CORVALLIS

David Emmel, history. Emmel has a minor in naval science and will be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also has a Latin American Affairs certificate from the College of Liberal Arts, served as writing assistant in the OSU Writing and Learning Center, and has volunteered for numerous community service projects.

Faye Miller, sociology. Miller minored in women's studies and served as program coordinator for the Women's Center, helping the university recognize Women's History Month. She went to Washington, D.C., this spring to lobby for low-income students and to defend Affirmative Action.

Mattias Segerholt, art. Segerholt came to OSU from Sweden in 1994 and will graduate with a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design and a bachelor of arts in international studies. He worked as a design intern with the internationally known firm of Weiden and Kennedy in Portland. Despite being challenged by the English language upon his arrival, he received an award for Outstanding Achievement in Writing by the English department last year. He traveled to Taiwan with the OSU Symphonic Band, and was peer adviser for the Footsteps program.

Shiloh Winsor, English. Winsor served as film critic for The Daily Barometer, OSU's student newspaper, and was involved as an actor in the University Theatre. He also voiced narrative descriptions of university plays to aid those with limited sight, and will return to OSU next year as a graduate student in English.

LAKE OSWEGO

Sarah Petrone, speech communication. Petrone served as an intern in the office of Sen. Gordon Smith, where she worked in the area of public relations. On campus, she served as president of Talons, a campus women's service organization, and Panhellenic, which oversees the university sorority system. She also was involved in the YMCA Big Sister program.

THE DALLES

Sarah Ericksen, speech communication. Ericksen will graduate with a minor in Spanish and a certificate in Latin American Affairs. Active in the theater, she had the leading role of Juliet in the University Theatre's recent production of "Romeo and Juliet." She helped start the OSU Drama Club, served as a teaching assistant in theater arts, and has worked with Hispanic students in the Corvallis public schools and in The Dalles.

NEW JERSEY

WILLINGBORO

Anne Marie Vassallo, economics. Vassallo competed for four years on the OSU women's gymnastics team, including a year as captain. She was an NCAA Academic All-American selection. Vassallo will work in community development in Costa Rica through OSU's global graduates community program before going to graduate school. She co-founded the campus chapter of OSU Habitat for Humanity, and served on the Benton County board of directors for that organization.
