CORVALLIS - Timothy P. White, dean of the College of Health and Human Performance at Oregon State University has been selected as the 1998 recipient of the Citation Award from the American College of Sports Medicine.

The organization is the world's leading medical and scientific society in exercise science and sports medicine, comprised of more than 17,000 members in 77 countries. The Citation Award is presented annually for distinguished achievement and contributions to exercise science and sports medicine.

White was recognized for his research on the molecular and cellular basis of skeletal muscle adaptations to stress, for his academic leadership, and for his record of professional contributions.

The application of his work includes a greater understanding of aging muscle, and the therapeutic use of physical activity for recovery of injured, diseased and transplanted muscle. White has played a pioneering role in expanding the knowledge base of the effect of mechanical load on growth, maturation, and functional properties of regenerating muscle tissue.

He was among the first to propose a comprehensive model to explain how chronic changes in muscle power affect muscle growth, regeneration and injury.

White is a recent past-president of the American College of Sports Medicine. Before joining the OSU faculty and administration, he was a professor and chair of the Department of Human Biodynamics at the University of California-Berkeley.

In 1997, White was named Alumnus of the Year at Fresno State University.
