CORVALLIS - Billy Snow of Sweet Home High School has been named the 1998 recipient of the Sigma Xi High School Science Teacher Award by the Oregon State University chapter of Sigma Xi, and several other awards were also made at a recent meeting.

Sigma Xi is a research and scientific honor society that seeks to encourage original investigation in science and technology, to honor scientific accomplishments, and to foster a creative and dynamic interaction among science, technology and society.

Snow, an exceptional biology teacher who has been at Sweet Home High School for 14 years, was honored for inspiring students to pursue science beyond mere requirements as well as spurring student teachers working in his classroom to help students enjoy and understand science.

Two new members inducted during the annual event were Yongjian Chang, a research assistant in horticulture from Corvallis, and Anthony Vella, an assistant professor in microbiology from Blodgett.

The group's Research Award went to William C. Krueger, head of the Department of Rangeland Resources, for pioneering research in riparian ecosystems, wildlife interactions, agroforestry, restoration ecology and biological diversity. Krueger, a Corvallis resident, was lauded for bringing disparate groups together to solve range and water problems in Oregon.
