CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University Counselor Education Program workshop to help educators and other professionals work with immigrant families will be held on campus on May 15.

The eight-hour workshop, "Cultural Transition Issues for Immigrant Families in Oregon," begins at 8:45 a.m. in OSU's LaSells Stewart Center. Registration is $110 for professionals and $65 for students. For information, contact Kim Richards at 541-737-5972.

Focus of the workshop is exploration of cultural transition issues facing immigrant families; understanding cultural themes relevant to counseling and learning; and sharing of skills and ideas for working with immigrant groups.

Particular focus will be on Hispanic-Latino, Southeast Asian and Russian immigrant families.

Keynote speaker is Ron Spendal, assistant director for Oregon's Adult and Family Services Division. From 1985-95, Spendal worked as coordinator for the Oregon State Refugee Program and also worked as a refugee specialist for the National Governors Association.

Other conference presenters include: Luis Caraballa, of Oregon's Senior and Disabled Services; Victoria Libov, employment service coordinator for the International Refugee Center of Oregon; and Chareundi Van-Si, director of Multnomah County Health Department's Mid-County Health Center.

The workshop is sponsored by OSU's Counselor Education Program in the College of Home Economics and Education's School of Education.
