CORVALLIS - An internationally renowned expert on African affairs is the featured guest speaker for Oregon State University's Africa Night celebration at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 9.

George Ayittey, president of the Free Africa Foundation and a visiting associate professor of economics at the American University in Washington, D.C. will speak on "Democracy in Africa - Issues, Problems and Solutions."

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children and include an evening of food, music and dance in OSU's Memorial Union Ballroom. The evening is sponsored by OSU's African Student Association. For information, contact Amaka Anadre at 541-757-0245.

Ayittey lectures extensively on African political and economics history, crisis and prospects. His audience has included the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, U.S. State Department and he has testified before U.S. Congress on several occasions. He was selected one of "The Outstanding Young Men in America" in 1985. In addition, he has appeared on numerous news programs, including CBS, ABC Nightline, BBC-TV, MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour and CNN Crossfire.

The evening will also feature performances by the "Kutatonon African Dancers, followed by dinner and a dance for everyone," Anadre said.
