CORVALLIS - A party, pizza and lots of information about health career opportunities for minority students will be available at Oregon State University on Thursday, Nov. 19.

The event is part of Health Careers Connections, a collaborative effort of OSU, the Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland area schools and other institutions, with the goal of increasing the number of under-represented minority students who complete OHSU degrees in medicine, dentistry, nursing and other areas.

African American, Hispanic and Native American students are encouraged to attend the free OSU event, which will be at 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union, Room 109 on the OSU campus. "While Oregon's communities are becoming more culturally diverse, few African American, Hispanic or Native American health care providers now serve Oregon's population," said Mary Michaud, director of the Health Careers Connections program at OHSU, which is funded primarily by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "This is an effort to support people from Oregon's communities of color as they pursue health careers."
