CORVALLIS - The College of Engineering at Oregon State University has chosen two OSU engineering faculty members to head its departments of nuclear engineering and computer science.

Andrew Klein, a professor of nuclear engineering, will head the Department of Nuclear Engineering. Klein, who has served as director of the Oregon Space Grant Program since 1993, is an expert in nuclear nonproliferation safeguards, advanced nuclear power reactors, and space reactor design and analysis, and has held consulting and other appointments with several national laboratories.

He received his doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1983 and has been on the OSU faculty since 1985.

Michael Quinn, a professor of computer science, will head the Department of Computer Science. An internationally recognized researcher in parallel computing, Quinn is also the author of three books and more than 50 professional papers. He received his doctorate in computer science from Washington State University in 1983 and has been on the OSU faculty since 1989.

Both Klein and Quinn have recently served in these positions on an interim basis. At OSU, the Department of Computer Science has 17 faculty, 360 undergraduate and 60 graduate students, focusing on the study of computer programs, data, computing, machinery and people and how they interact. The Department of Nuclear Engineering has seven faculty, 65 undergraduate and 25 graduate students pursuing degree programs in nuclear engineering and radiation health physics, and studying all aspects of nuclear energy and technology involving the use of radiation and radioactive materials.
