CORVALLIS - Oregon State University's College of Pharmacy will benefit from a $200,000 grant from the J.M. Long Foundation that will enhance student learning, said Thomas A. Chandler, director of advancement for the college.

Robert M. Long, president of the foundation, informed the university that the foundation trustees approved a grant of $200,00 to the OSU Foundation - part of a $600,000 goal established for funding the renovation of the existing College of Pharmacy Practice Lab into a pharmaceutical care learning center, Chandler said.

The learning center will include a patient care pharmacy area that includes examination rooms, counseling areas and computer resources, a pharmacy information center, with computers, periodicals, texts and study and conference areas, and a compounding and dispensing area for prescription products.

The current pharmacy practice area has not been substantially upgraded for decades, Chandler said.

"This will take us one step closer to completion of this much-needed renovation, moving an outdated lab into a facility that will prepare pharmaceutical professionals with the skills and training to meet the health care needs of today and tomorrow," Chandler said. "We are deeply indebted to the J.M. Long Foundation for their long-time scholarship and capital support."

Chandler said that Stephen Roath, a 1963 OSU College of Pharmacy graduate who is now president of Longs Drug Stores, has offered his encouragement and support of the learning center proposal.

"Steve has also been working very hard to encourage others in the pharmaceutical industry to get behind this project," Chandler said.
