CORVALLIS - David N. Livingstone, a leading Irish geographer and expert on pre-Darwinian theories of human origin, will give a pair of free public lectures at Oregon State University.

Livingstone will speak on "Science and Religion: Remapping the Terrain" on Thursday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Milam Auditorium. His second lecture, ""The Historical Roots of Our Environmental Crisis: A Re-evaluation," will begin at noon on Friday, April 30, in Withycombe Hall Room 109.

A professor of geography and intellectual history at the Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Livingstone is a prolific author as well as noted scholar. He is the author or editor of 10 books and more than 100 articles.

He is a fellow of both the British Academy and the Royal Irish Academy. In 1998, he was awarded the Centenary Medal of the Royal Geographical Society.

Livingstone's OSU appearances are sponsored by the university's Department of History and supported by a grant from the Templeton Foundation and the American Scientific Affiliation.
