CORVALLIS - Robert T. Lackey, associate director for science at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency laboratory in Corvallis, has been selected as a 1999-2000 Fulbright scholar.

Lackey also is a courtesy professor of fisheries and wildlife at Oregon State University, and an OSU adjunct professor of political science. He regularly teaches a graduate course at Oregon State on ecological policy, and is an internationally recognized expert on the relationship between ecological science and public policy.

He will continue his work in those areas during his Fulbright tenure - a six-month stint at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George.

Lackey's research focuses on ecosystem health and management, and on ecological risk assessment - efforts to ensure that decision-makers have access to the precise scientific information necessary for establishing sound public policy.

Increasingly, he said, these are large-scale, often subtle stressors to the environment, including changes in land use, vast hydrologic modifications of watersheds, widespread introduction of exotic or alien species, and their resulting consequences.

Lackey has spent 30 years working on a range of environmental issues from positions in government and academia, and continues an active program of research and scholarly study. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists.
