CORVALLIS - Sherman H. Bloomer, a professor and chair of the Department of Geosciences at Oregon State University, has been named interim dean of the College of Science at OSU. The appointment is effective Sept. 1.

He replaces Frederick H. Horne, who will retire as dean this Dec. 31.

Bloomer will work with Horne through the rest of this year. The College of Science is one of the major academic units at OSU. Its 12 departments offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, plus special pre-professional programs in health and medicine.

An OSU administrator and faculty member since 1995, Bloomer is an internationally recognized scholar specializing in the geochemistry and geology of convergent margins and the lower oceanic crust. He has led several oceanographic expeditions in the western Pacific and has worked with the Ocean Drilling Program as a scientist and as a member of the advisory structure.

Bloomer is familiar with the College of Science, chairing its strategic planning committee as well as one of its departments.

He is a graduate of Rice University, where he was a National Merit Scholar. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego, through the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Before coming to OSU, Bloomer was a faculty member and administrator in the Department of Earth Sciences at Boston University, 1987 to 1995. He also was on the faculty in the Department of Geology at Duke University from 1983 to 1987.
