CORVALLIS - David Nicodemus, who served for more than 20 years as dean of faculty at Oregon State University, died Saturday (June 19) in Corvallis. He was 82.

Nicodemus came to OSU in 1950, joining the faculty as an assistant professor of physics. The next year, he won the Carter Award for teaching given by the College of Science, and in 1956, won the university's Outstanding Teacher Award.

He was named assistant dean of the College of Science in 1962 and was acting dean for more than a year. In 1966, he was appointed dean of faculty at Oregon State, a position he held until his retirement Dec. 31, 1986.

Just before he retired, he was honored by the OSU Faculty Senate with the D. Curtis Mumford Faculty Service Award for distinguished service to the faculty.

Nicodemus was born on July 1, 1916, in Kobe, Japan. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from DePauw University, and a Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University.

After receiving his doctorate, Nicodemus went to work as a physicist for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1943, and he remained there until after World War II. He returned to Stanford University as an instructor in 1946, and remained on the faculty there until 1950, when he came to Oregon State.

At Nicodemus' request, there will be no funeral service.
