CORVALLIS - Six Oregon State University College of Business faculty members will receive summer research fellowships of about $7,000 each.

The OSU educators were selected as "Bales Scholars" by the College of Business Scholarship Committee on the basis of competitive research proposals. The fellowships are named for Vivien E. Bales, a 1937 alumna of the college, who died in 1992. After her graduation from OSU, she earned a master's in education from Stanford University and worked as a high school teacher and college instructor for more than 46 years in Oregon and California.

To demonstrate her appreciation for the education she received from the College of Business, she provided for the creation of the Vivien E. Bales Dean's Endowment to support excellence in scholarship and programs.

This is the first year Bales Scholars have been funded by the endowment. The 1999 Bales Scholars include associate professors Daniel Brown, who will research privacy and public policy toward high-tech marketing, and James McAlexander, who will study consumer perceptions and attitudes regarding the environmental impact of the acquisition and use of forest products.

Assistant professors include: Raymond Brooks, correlations of New York Stock Exchange opening batch to intraday trading volume and returns; Jonathan Down, developing and utilizing a survey instrument for assessing the strategic management process of organizations; Donald Herrmann, segment reporting disclosures under statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 131; Key-Suk "Steve" Kim, a study of the role of personal dependence for distributor attitude and behavior.
