CORVALLIS - Oregon State University students are inviting the community to Ag Day 1999 on Friday, May 21, an annual campus celebration that highlights the importance of agriculture to OSU and the world.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the OSU Memorial Union Quad will be scene of pig kissing, prize drawings, demonstrations and displays of the various ways agriculture affects lives. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., agricultural students will serve up a barbecued lunch.

And one group of students will be working to raise funds to help finance a research expedition to China.

"Twenty students are taking a class in Comparative World Agriculture at OSU this term as an introduction to China and agribusiness practices there," said Megan Wright, an OSU freshman in animal science. While the group has applied for some research grants to help finance their trip, the group still has several thousand dollars to raise before their two-week trip begins on Sept. 4.

The solution: A pig kissing competition and prize drawing held during Ag Day.

"Gregory Thompson, an assistant professor in agricultural education, has already volunteered to kiss the pig," Wright said.
