CORVALLIS - Students in the theater arts program at Oregon State University will present a series of student-written and directed one-act plays beginning June 2.

The plays are the culmination of the program's sequence of courses on writing plays, taught by poet and playwright Harry MacCormack.

"The year-long class and production project remains one of the few opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in the Northwest to 'workshop' creations," MacCormack said. "As an integral part of theater arts, play script writing is a learned craft."

Two years ago, six of the eight OSU one-act plays were honored with an invitation to a regional contest and one was selected as the best play.

OSU students will present nine one-act plays this June at the studio theater in Withycombe Hall. Admission will be $2 per session.

The program will begin on Wednesday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. On tap are "Carpe Diem," written by Peggy Ringle and directed by Juliet Miller; "Welcome to the Club," written by Juliet Miller and directed by Amy Binder; and "In Nomine," written by Rick Lubbers and directed by Adam Goodrich.

On Thursday, June 3, the schedule includes "Strange Way Down," written by Shawn Edgar and directed by Nick Levine; "You Tell Me How it Feels," written by Nick Levine and directed by Ryan Manderfeld; and "Jackoff," written by David Radford and directed by Stacie Reichmuth. The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Adjudicators from other universities will attend performances of all nine plays on Saturday, June 5, to critique them. The public is invited; admission is $2. The session from 2 to 5 p.m. will include "Carpe Diem," "Welcome to the Club," "In Nomine," "Jackoff" and "You Tell Me How it Feels."
