CORVALLIS - James W. Loewen, one of America's leading proponents for a more accurate portrayal of history, will deliver a free public lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Oregon State University. His lecture, "Lies Across America," will begin at 7:30 p.m. in LaSells Stewart Center's Construction and Engineering Auditorium.

He also will present a free workshop for teachers on Nov. 16 from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Agricultural Production Room of LaSells Stewart Center, which is located at 26th Street and Western Boulevard in Corvallis.

From noon to 1 p.m., Loewen will appear in OSU's Memorial Union lounge for an open discussion with students, staff, faculty and the public.

Loewen is the author of "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong," which was both a scathing expose of American history textbooks and a retelling of American history. For his efforts, he received three national awards, including the American Book Award. To write "Lies," he spent two years at the Smithsonian Institution surveying a dozen leading high school history textbooks. He found what he called "an embarrassing blend of bland optimism, blind nationalism and plain misinformation, weighing in at an average of 888 pages and almost five pounds."

His latest book, "Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Got Wrong," was published this fall by The New Press.

He also is the author of "The Truth about Columbus."

Loewen taught race relations for 20 years at the University of Vermont. He previously was on the faculty at Tougaloo College in Mississippi.
